Francisco de Paula Santander was one of the leaders of the patriotic forces in the War of Independence of the Spanish colonies in America from to In , Santander became the commander-in-chief of the patriotic army.
He participated alongside Simon Bolivar in the Battle of Boyacá and the liberation of Bogotá in From to , he served as the vice president of Gran Colombia, effectively acting as the president during Bolivar's military campaigns.
